What is Freemasonry?

A guide to friendship, tradition and community, from Alwarestoch Lodge No. 7805 in Gosport, Hampshire.

What do Freemasons do?

Freemasonry brings people together through lodge meetings, shared traditions, friendship and charitable activity. Members learn through ceremonies and reflection, support one another and contribute to their communities. The United Grand Lodge of England identifies integrity, friendship, respect and service as its guiding values.

Is Freemasonry a religion?

Freemasonry is not a religion and does not replace a member’s faith. UGLE requires belief in a Supreme Being, while welcoming members of different religions. The Secretary can explain this requirement and answer questions before you apply.

Who can become a Freemason?

Alwarestoch is a men’s lodge under UGLE, welcoming membership enquiries from men aged 18 and over, irrespective of race or religion, subject to the membership requirements. Women can explore the separate women’s Grand Lodges through UGLE’s joining guidance.

Do I need to know a Freemason?

No family connection or invitation is needed to make an enquiry. If you do not know a member, contact the lodge directly. An informal conversation gives you a chance to ask questions and decide whether you would like to take the next step.

What happens at a lodge meeting?

A meeting combines lodge business with the ceremonies and traditions of Freemasonry. Members take different roles and learn at their own pace. At Alwarestoch, the evening continues with a meal known as the Festive Board, where conversation and friendship are an important part of lodge life. Formal meetings are for members and visiting Freemasons by arrangement; prospective members should ask about meeting us informally.

How much time does membership involve?

Alwarestoch holds seven regular meetings each year, on the second Wednesday of September, October, November, December, February, April and May. There may also be rehearsals, social occasions and visits to other lodges. Discuss your availability with the Secretary and consult our lodge calendar for dates.

What does Freemasonry cost?

Ask for the current annual subscription, joining charges, dining costs and any clothing or other items you may need. These should be explained before you decide to apply. The dining page shows the published meal choices and prices; the Secretary can explain membership costs.

Why do people join?

People join for different reasons: friendship, personal development, an interest in tradition or the opportunity to help others. Lodge life can offer experience in public speaking, teamwork and taking responsibility. A conversation with members is a useful way to understand what those opportunities look like at Alwarestoch.

How does the lodge support charity?

Our members support local causes through giving and community activity. Read about Alwarestoch’s charitable work in Gosport and browse the lodge news archive for accounts of our work and fellowship.

What happens after I enquire?

Your membership enquiry goes to the Lodge Secretary. We can arrange an informal conversation, explain eligibility and practical commitments, and answer your questions. Making contact does not commit you to joining.
