Alwarestoch Lodge · Gosport

Your questions about Freemasonry

Practical answers for prospective members and visiting Freemasons in Gosport.

Do I have to be invited to join?

No. You can make a membership enquiry directly, whether or not you know a Freemason. Contacting us is the start of a conversation, not a promise of membership.

Who can apply to Alwarestoch?

Alwarestoch is a men’s lodge under UGLE. Enquiries are welcome from men aged 18 and over, subject to the membership requirements. The Secretary will explain eligibility before you apply.

Is Freemasonry a religion?

No. It does not replace a member’s religion. UGLE requires belief in a Supreme Being; the Secretary can explain what this means.

Can women become Freemasons?

Yes. Women’s Freemasonry has separate Grand Lodges. Alwarestoch is a men’s lodge; UGLE’s joining guidance links to the Order of Women Freemasons and Freemasonry for Women.

Where does Alwarestoch meet?

At Gosport Masonic Hall, 5 Clarence Road, Gosport, Hampshire, PO12 1BB. Contact the Secretary before travelling and ask about any access requirements.

When are regular meetings?

The second Wednesday of September, October, November, December, February, April and May. Confirm the individual date and start time through the calendar and Secretary.

Can I attend a meeting before joining?

Formal lodge meetings are for members and visiting Freemasons by arrangement. If you are curious about joining, ask for an informal conversation with members. Public events are labelled separately when confirmed.

What costs should I ask about?

Ask for the current joining charges, annual subscription, meals and any clothing or regalia you may need. Confirm the full commitment before applying. Published meal prices do not represent the whole cost of membership.

How much time should I allow?

Alongside our seven regular meetings, there may be rehearsals, social occasions or visits. Discuss your availability and family or work commitments with the lodge before deciding.

What is the Festive Board?

It is the meal and social gathering after a lodge meeting. Dining is booked in advance; confirm the current menu, price and deadline with the Dining Steward.

I am already a Freemason. How do I visit?

Contact the Secretary through the visitors page to confirm attendance and lodge arrangements. Book dining separately if you plan to stay for the meal.

Does enquiring commit me to joining?

No. It gives you the chance to ask questions and meet members before deciding whether to proceed. Ask about the application process and requirements during that conversation.

How can I ask about accessibility or dietary needs?

Contact the lodge before your visit. Explain the assistance or dietary arrangements you need so that the Secretary or Dining Steward can confirm what is possible.

Where can I read about the lodge’s heritage?

Our History page includes the founding brethren and warrant. The Honour Board, Memorials and Family Tree pages record different parts of the lodge’s story.

Can I discuss joining with my partner or family?

Yes. Joining involves a commitment of time and money, so it makes sense to discuss it with the people close to you.

Ask the Secretary to explain the expected commitments and which social occasions, if any, are open to partners, family or friends. Formal lodge meetings have different attendance arrangements from social events.

Do I need to understand Masonic traditions before enquiring?

No. You can begin with no previous knowledge of Freemasonry.

Ask about unfamiliar words, the purpose of lodge meetings and what membership involves. An informal conversation is the place to learn, rather than something you need to prepare for.
